MISTAKE #1 – Not Completing a PostGrad Residency at a GPR / AEGD Program

This is a common topic asked to me and other owners of private practices very frequently.  Many new dentists have a consideration that the time taken to complete an residency is one year lost from making money to pay off students debt.  Others are concerned that they might not be good candidates for post\grad training due to a low GPA.  Then there are many that don’t even consider a residency because they don’t know such training exists or they find out and decide to do it after the application and selection deadlines.  Well, whatever the situation is, not completing a residency after graduation is a big mistake in my opinion.

I believe this is a mistake because the new dentist misses out on at least 9 opportunities to grow, expand, learn and get exposed to success strategies that are fundamental.

I have an entire presentation on this topic that I share with 2nd and 3rd year dental students prepping and considering their immediate futures after school.  I have spoken to students at several schools like Rutgers, Howard, Maryland, Virginia Commonwealth, Columbia and NYU (See video 9 REASONS WHY A POSTGRAD RESIDENCY IS NOT OPTIONAL).  Most shared that  their school does not have a formal lecture or a curricula series on how to apply to residencies. Additionally, the surveys we complied from the participants of my presentations indicated that most wanted more details and information on the reasons and specific questions relating to their situation.

Unfortunately, time and money spent in dental school is NOT enough.  More time and money is needed  as part of your professional journey.  Completing a Residency program gives you more experience, exposure, repetition, speed, discernment, confidence, and cases to add to your portfolio.  And you get paid; a salary with full benefits and paid holidays with educational leave.  (See video 9 REASONS WHY A POSTGRAD RESIDENCY IS NOT OPTIONAL).
